PESHAWAR, Pakistán (AP) — Una bomba caminera estalló al paso de un vehículo que llevaba a agentes asignados a proteger al personal de salud que realiza una campaña de inmunización contra la polio en un antiguo bastión del Talibán paquistaní, en el noroeste de Pakistán. la detonación hirió a seis agentes y tres civiles, según autoridades.
Ningún trabajador de la campaña resultó herido en el ataque en Waziristán del Sur, un distrito en la provincia de Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, según indicó el policía local Tahrir Sarfraz.
Nadie reclamó la autoría del ataque, que al parecer iba dirigido contra la policía.
A menudo, las campañas contra la polio en Pakistán se ven empañadas por la violencia. Los milicianos atacan a los equipos de vacunación y a los policías encargados de protegerlos, afirmando que las campañas son una conspiración occidental para esterilizar a los niños.
El nuevo ataque se produjo horas después de que Pakistán emprendiera una nueva iniciativa para vacunar a 30 millones de niños contra la polio. Desde enero, Pakistán ha reportado 17 casos nuevos que ponen en peligro décadas de esfuerzos por eliminar la enfermedad en el país.
Pakistán y la vecina Afganistán son los únicos países en los que nunca se han detenido los contagios de polio.
La enfermedad, que puede resultar letal o causar parálisis, afecta sobre todo a niños menores de cinco años y suele propagarse a través de agua contaminada.
