RICHMOND, Virginia, EE.UU. (AP) — Un jurado fallo a favor de tres mujeres que afirmaron haber sufrido abuso sexual cuando eran pacientes en un hospital infantil de Virginia, indemnizándolas con un total de 300 millones de dólares por daños y perjuicios.
El jurado del tribunal de circuito de Richmond indemnizó a cada mujer con 60 millones de dólares por concepto de daños y 40 millones por daños punitivos, informó la televisora WTVR.
Un total de 46 expacientes demandaron al Hospital Cumberland para Niños y Adolescentes de New Kent, que ofrece tratamiento a niños vulnerables, y al doctor Daniel Davidow, que fue director médico del hospital durante mucho tiempo. En este primer juicio, las tres expacientes afirmaron que Davidow las tocó inapropiadamente al realizarles exámenes de pulso femoral.
“Tener a un grupo de personas —un grupo de extraños— mirándolas, escuchándolas, diciéndoles que les creen, que creen en ellas, las quebró, las hizo romper en llanto de inmediato,” dijo Kevin Biniazan, el abogado de las mujeres. “Nos hizo a todos romper en llanto”.
Bob Donnelly, abogado de Davidow, dijo al jurado en los alegatos iniciales que Davidow “niega categóricamente” las acusaciones de agresión sexual. Donnelly dijo que el examen de pulso femoral realizado por Davidow se remonta a las décadas de 1960 y 1970 y que es “un examen estándar”.
Davidow fue declarado inocente de acusaciones de abuso sexual calificado contra otras dos expacientes en un juicio penal realizado en abril.
El próximo juicio civil está programado para marzo.
