LONDRES (AP).- El principal abogado de una investigación pública sobre la muerte en 2018 de una mujer británica envenenada por una neurotoxina de la era soviética indicó este día que había suficiente veneno en el frasco —que ella abrió sin saber— para matar a miles de personas.
Dawn Sturgess y su pareja se desplomaron después de entrar en contacto con un frasco de perfume desechado que contenía la neurotoxina Novichok en la ciudad de Amesbury, en el suroeste de Inglaterra. Ella roció el contenido de la botella en su muñeca y murió días después. Su pareja sobrevivió.
“La evidencia sugerirá que esta botella debió ser dejada antes en algún lugar público, creando el riesgo obvio de que alguien la encontrara y se la llevara a casa”, dijo el abogado principal, Andrew O’Connor.
La mujer entró en contacto con la sustancia cuatro meses después que un exoficial de inteligencia ruso, Sergei Skripal, y su hija se enfermaran con Novichok en un atentado en la cercana ciudad de Salisbury.
El Reino Unido ha culpado a la inteligencia rusa, pero Moscú negó cualquier participación. El presidente ruso Vladímir Putin calificó a Skripal, un doble agente del Reino Unido durante sus días de espionaje, de “basura” sin interés para el Kremlin al grado que fue intercambiado en un canje de espías en 2010.
Por seguridad, los Skripal no testificarán durante la investigación.
Heather Hallett, la forense que llevó a cabo la investigación de 2018 sobre la muerte de Sturgess, dijo que se necesitaba una pesquisa pública y completa sobre cómo murió la mujer. A diferencia de las investigaciones rutinarias en casos en que se desconoce la causa de la muerte o si alguien muere violentamente, las pesquisas públicas pueden incluir material de inteligencia delicado.
