CENTERVILLE, Massachusetts, EU (AP).- Miembros de la familia Kennedy se reunieron este día en el funeral de Ethel Kennedy, la viuda del senador demócrata asesinado Robert F. Kennedy.
Ethel Kennedy, quien crió a sus 11 hijos luego que su esposo fue asesinado y permaneció dedicada a causas sociales y al legado de su familia, falleció el jueves 10 de octubre a los 96 años.
El funeral estuvo cerrado al público y tuvo lugar en la iglesia Our Lady of Victory en Centerville, Massachusetts, a unos 45 kilómetros al norte de Boston. Familiares y amigos se concentraron en la iglesia bajo un cielo gris y frío. Ethel Kennedy falleció debido a complicaciones de un derrame cerebral días atrás.
“Junto con el trabajo de toda una vida en cuestiones de justicia social y derechos humanos, nuestra madre deja nueve hijos, 34 nietos y 24 tataranietos junto con numerosas sobrinas y sobrinos, todos los cuales la aman entrañablemente”, decía el comunicado de la familia al anunciar su deceso.
El presidente Joe Biden la llamó “un icono estadunidense: una matriarca llena de optimismo y coraje moral, un símbolo de resiliencia y servicio”.
La matriarca Kennedy, cuyos hijos fueron Kathleen, Joseph II, Robert Jr., David, Courtney, Michael, Kerry, Christopher, Max, Douglas y Rory, fue de los últimos miembros restantes de una generación que incluía al presidente John F. Kennedy. Su familia señaló que recientemente había disfrutado de la compañía de muchos de sus familiares, antes de enfermarse.
Hija de un millonario y que se casó con el futuro senador y secretario de Justicia en 1950, Ethel Kennedy soportó más muertes trágicas a sus 40 años que la mayoría de las personas en toda su vida.
Ella se encontraba al lado de Robert F. Kennedy cuando éste fue asesinado de un disparo en la cocina del Hotel Ambassador de Los Ángeles el 5 de junio de 1968, justo después de ganar las primarias presidenciales demócratas en California. Su cuñado, el presidente John F. Kennedy, fue asesinado en Dallas menos de cinco años antes.
Ethel Kennedy luego fundó el Centro Robert F. Kennedy para la Justicia y los Derechos Humanos y fue activista de causas como el control de armas y los derechos humanos. Muy rara vez hablaba del asesinato de su esposo.
