MADRID (EUROPA PRESS).- El huracán Helene dejó al menos 107 personas fallecidas a su paso por Estados Unidos desde que tocó tierra en Florida el pasado jueves por la noche con una fuerza de categoría 4 y unos vientos máximos sostenidos de más de 200 kilómetros por hora, lo que le convirtió en uno de los más potentes en azotar al país.
La mayor parte de las víctimas mortales han sido registradas en el estado de Carolina del Norte, con hasta 30 decesos en el condado de Buncombe, según ha podido confirmar la cadena de televisión estadounidense CBS News.
Las autoridades también han recibido notificaciones sobre 600 personas desaparecidas, si bien se espera que gran parte de estas se encuentren con vida y que su actual estado se deba a la falta de acceso a las redes de telecomunicación.
En torno a 2.1 millones de personas se encuentran sin acceso a la electricidad en los estados de Carolina del Norte, Carolina del Sur, Georgia, Florida y Virginia, donde fue declarado el estado de emergencia a medida que ‘Helene’ se aproximaba a territorio estadunidense.
Por su parte, el presidente del país, Joe Biden, ya ha sido informado sobre los impactos por la ahora tormenta tropical, tras lo que ha confirmado que viajará a las comunidades más afectadas tan pronto como se asegure de que “no interrumpe” las actividades de emergencia.
