BEIJING (AP) — El Ministerio chino de Comercio investigará a la empresa de moda PVH, propietaria de firmas como Tommy Hilfiger y Calvin Klein, por supuestas infracciones de sus leyes comerciales.
En comunicados publicados en internet, el ministerio dijo que investigaría un posible boicot a los productos de la remota región occidental de Xinjiang, donde se ha acusado al Partido Comunista, que gobierna China, de retener a miembros de grupos étnicos de mayoría musulmana en campos de detención.
Washington ha bloqueado algunas importaciones de Xinjiang, mientras que Beijing ha protestado contra esas decisiones. China niega que haya ningún abuso y dice que las medidas que ha tomado son necesarias para combatir el terrorismo y un movimiento separatista.
Las empresas que compran ropa, algodón, tomates y otros productos de Xinjiang enfrentan presiones de consumidores occidentales por las supuestas violaciones de derechos humanos en la región, mientras que Beijing ha tomado represalias contra las marcas que expresan sus preocupaciones por la posibilidad de trabajos forzosos.
“El grupo estadounidense PVH es sospechoso de incumplir los principios normales de comercio y boicotear de forma poco razonable el algodón de Xinjiang y otros productos de forma infundada, dañando gravemente los intereses y derechos legítimos de las empresas chinas relevantes y poniendo en peligro la soberanía, seguridad y el desarrollo de China”, indicó el Ministerio de Comercio.
En un comunicado en su sitio web, PVH dijo que cumple las leyes y regulaciones de los lugares en los que hace negocios, “incluido en lo que respecta a la política del gobierno estadounidense en relación a Xinjiang”.
La investigación se haría según las normas de la “Lista de entidades poco fiables” de China, utilizada para imponer sanciones de represalia a medidas tomadas contra Beijing, indicó el ministerio.
PVH tenía 30 días a partir del martes para dar información a China y explicar si había tomado medidas discriminatorias contra productos asociados a Xinjiang en los últimos tres años, añadió.
